Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Title of Site:

PowToon

Description of Site:

PowToon is a Web 2.0 tool that allows users to create animated videos and presentations. Users report that it's as easy as PowerPoint but offers so much more to engage the audience. The baseline version of PowToon is free, or you can upgrade to HD downloads of the tool for a cost of $19/month or $57/month, depending on how you'd like to use PowToon. As I perused the site, I was pleasantly surprised to see no ads polluting the page, just the PowToon information I needed to create a presentation. After completing the presentation, users can publish and then share the link with others via email or any other chosen method. The free download version of PowToon is recommended for teachers and students as it provides all of the essentials, while the HD version might be more suitable for business purposes. It is a completely acceptable tool to use in schools and would be most appropriate for students in grades 7-12.

Educational Uses of Site

As for use in the classroom, teachers might find PowToon useful when presenting new information to students--it's the perfect way to spice up traditional notes and really get the attention of the audience. Students can use this tool in the same way, conducting research and presenting their findings or perhaps even writing a narrative and illustrating it with animation.

Review of Site

PowToon is an excellent way to present information to an audience in an innovative, engaging way. The site is also extremely user-friendly, offering varying versions of the tool (depending on how in depth you'd like your presentation to be) and providing step-by-step tutorial instructions for first-time users. PowToon could just as easily be incorporated into a business meeting by a CEO as it could into a student presentation given by a seventh grader. Perhaps best of all, the baseline version, which offers plenty of functions to create an attention-getting presentation, is completely free.
